ADHD in San Francisco: Evaluation and Local Help
Plenty of adults in demanding jobs read an ADHD checklist and see themselves in it, and a ten-minute screen will usually agree — but short sleep, an overloaded calendar and anxiety running hot produce the same answers.

I'm Canybec Sulayman, PMHNP-BC, MBA; nineteen years in ICUs taught me that a reading only means something against a baseline, and ADHD has one: it starts in childhood, even when nobody named it then. The first question is when.

Where to start in San Francisco
Families often wait for a diagnosis before asking the school for anything, and lose a semester doing it. In San Francisco Unified, a special education assessment starts with an email to the principal, and a medical diagnosis on its own isn't enough for a 504 plan. Ask in writing, and ask early. Everything below is public or nonprofit; I checked each one on its own website in October 2026.
- At school Email the principal to request a special education assessment, or ask the school's 504 coordinator about a 504 plan. Keep a copy of what you send. Support for Families runs IEP clinics if you want a parent who's been through it beside you.
- At college or work At SF State, you can book the first disability appointment before you have documentation; registration can take up to five weeks, so start before midterms. For work, the Department of Rehabilitation helps people with disabilities find and keep jobs, though new applicants currently go on a waiting list.
- For a diagnosis I evaluate children 10 and older, teens and adults, by telehealth anywhere in California. I take the history back to childhood first, then check sleep, iron, thyroid and everything you take. If the timeline and the workup both point to ADHD, that's the diagnosis, and we plan treatment from there. Request an evaluation
- For support CHADD lists no San Francisco chapter. The Mental Health Association of SF runs a weekly ADHD group you can join without a diagnosis, and CHADD of California meets online.

Insurance & costQuestions from San Francisco
How do I ask San Francisco Unified for an ADHD evaluation or a 504 plan?
For a special education assessment, email your school's principal. For a 504 plan, contact the school's 504 coordinator or principal and share any reports you have; a medical diagnosis on its own isn't enough. The district's family resource line is 415-340-1716, and Support for Families (415-920-5040) helps parents through the process.
Is there an ADHD support group in San Francisco?
CHADD doesn't list a San Francisco chapter. The Mental Health Association of San Francisco runs an ADHD and executive function peer group on Mondays, open with or without a diagnosis, and CHADD of California runs online groups. ADDA's online groups for adults need a membership.
Can college students in San Francisco get ADHD accommodations?
Yes, through the campus disability office. At SF State, the Disability Programs and Resource Center (415-338-2472) lets you book the first appointment without documentation. Registration can take up to five weeks, and accommodations don't apply backward.
Do you see San Francisco patients in person?
Most visits are by telehealth, anywhere in California. Limited in-person visits at 220 Montgomery St are by appointment; ask when you schedule.
Show 1 more question
What does an ADHD evaluation with you cost?
Self-pay is $450 for the 75-minute evaluation and $150 for 30-minute follow-ups. With insurance, your cost depends on your plan; we check benefits first, and a benefits check doesn't guarantee coverage.
