Many Gilbert residents struggle with focus, concentration, and productivity and assume it must be ADHD. A symptom checklist alone can miss medical contributors such as thyroid dysfunction, iron deficiency, sleep disorders, medication effects, or nutritional deficiencies.
Before diagnosing ADHD, we investigate whether thyroid dysfunction, iron deficiency, sleep disorders, or other medical factors are contributing to the symptoms. If a medical driver is present, the treatment plan may change before ADHD medication is considered or adjusted.
Your evaluation includes labs and a medical review when the picture calls for them, not a checklist and a prescription. Canybec spent 19 years in critical care nursing; the habit of checking the body first came with him.

Where to start with ADHD in Gilbert
The trap I see most is waiting for a diagnosis before asking the school for anything. Parents can request an evaluation without one, and a student who passes every class can still qualify for help: grades measure the output, not what it costs the kid to produce it. Start where the problem shows up. Everything below is public or nonprofit; I checked each one on its own website in October 2026.
- At school Ask in writing for an evaluation or a 504 plan. You don't need a diagnosis first, and a passing student can still qualify. Keep a copy.
- At college or work Campus disability offices handle accommodations; bring documentation, and if you don't have any yet, step 3 comes first. If ADHD keeps costing you jobs, call Arizona Vocational Rehabilitation; they decide eligibility person by person, so don't rule yourself out before they do.
- For a diagnosis I evaluate children 10 and older, teens and adults. I start with the timeline, because ADHD begins in childhood even when nobody named it then, and the first question is when focus broke down. Then I check sleep, iron, thyroid and medication effects. If ADHD still fits, I say so. Request an evaluation
