Anxiety and Depression in Rancho Palos Verdes
Depression after sixty often doesn't arrive as sadness; it shows up as poor sleep, aches and a shrinking calendar, and gets filed under getting older.

I'm Canybec Sulayman, PMHNP-BC, MBA; nineteen years of ICU work taught me that a slow decline is still a decline, and it deserves the same workup as a fast one. Age alone doesn't explain it.

Where to find help on the Peninsula
Isolation does a lot of the damage, so the first step doesn't have to be a clinic. Peer lines, NAMI South Bay's groups and the county's warm lines cover the stretch before care starts, and they're worth keeping after it does. Everything below is public or nonprofit; I checked each one on its own website in October 2026.
- If tonight is hard If it isn't a crisis, Project Return's warm line answers weekday afternoons and evenings and weekend days; if you're over 60, the Friendship Line answers at any hour. If it is a crisis, call or text 988, or the LA County Help Line at 800-854-7771.
- Find a group NAMI South Bay runs free peer groups on Zoom twice a week, plus family groups. DBSA South Bay meets in person in Torrance and online.
- For an evaluation Before I call it depression or anxiety, I check what sleep, thyroid, alcohol and the medication list are doing; in older adults especially, a side effect can pass for low mood. If it's still depression or anxiety after that, I treat it knowing what else is in play. Request an evaluation
- If you're a new parent, a veteran, LGBTQ+ or over 60 There's specific help for each, nearby or by phone; it's listed below.
